How do foods affect our metabolism?

David Ludwig, MD
There are many studies that now show that our interest in and ability to become physically active is also influenced by the foods we eat. Imagine having a super sized fast food meal with 2,000 calories 20 minutes ago. Do you feel like getting outdoors, getting on the jungle gym, you know? You probably are looking for a couch to collapse on, or even a bed. Whereas foods that release slowly, in other words, low glycemic foods have been shown to increase our ability to sustain physical activity because they are releasing the fuels that we need for physical activity in a more sustained fashion, so when we eat, we are also affecting our ability uh alter metabolism, and when we get physically active, we are also feeding back and influencing um how we use our foods.
